Yellow Feather Pick-Up Man Campaign
You Can Be Someone's "Pick-Up Man"
Inside the rodeo arena, the pick-up men are the men who help the riders get off their saddle bronc, bareback horses, and bring them to safety on the ground. They are lifesavers and someone the riders know to reach out to for help. Outside the arena, anyone can be a pick-up man to help save the life of someone experiencing depression or thoughts of suicide.
Yellow feathers symbolize hope, joy, freedom, and looking forward to a bright future. Finding a yellow feather is a good symbol for those who feel lost, depressed, or anxious, as they provide a reason to look forward to their future. At rodeos across South Dakota, attendees are wearing yellow feathers in their hats, hair, or incorporating them in their outfit to signal they are willing to be someone's "pick-up man" outside the arena. Since June 2025, over 72,000 campaign materials have been distributed.

“It’s one of those things where you never really know for sure the lives that you’ve saved, if you’ve saved any at all, but you do know that if you don’t do something and try, nothing will change, and so I believe this has been a very positive. It’s been a try that’s turned into a very positive message."
